Unlike Amazon or eBay, Shopify itself doesn't take a cut of your sale price — but if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee (typically 0.5-2% depending on plan) on top of card processing fees. Using Shopify Payments avoids that extra fee.

Worked Example

Example: $50 order, COGS $18, using Shopify Payments (2.9% + $0.30 processing, no extra transaction fee). Processing fee = $50 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.75. Net profit = $50 − $18 − $1.75 = $30.25, a margin of about 60.5%.
