Find how much mulch you need for your garden beds.

2-3 inches of mulch depth is the standard recommendation for most garden beds — thinner doesn't suppress weeds effectively, and much thicker can suffocate plant roots or promote fungal growth against stems.

Worked Example

Example: A 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 50 cubic feet = 1.85 cubic yards, or about 25 bags at 2 cu ft each.

Formula / Method

Cubic Feet = Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft)
Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27
Bags (2 cu ft) = Cubic Feet / 2
