Markup is profit as a percentage of cost (not price, which is margin — see our Margin Calculator for that version). A 50% markup on a $20 cost item gives a $30 price, but that's a 33% margin, not 50% — the two terms measure profit relative to different bases and are frequently confused.
Worked Example
Example: Cost $20, desired markup 50%. Price = $20 × 1.50 = $30.00.
